Beginner Classes

Introduction to hand and machine sewing

In this friendly, practical session, you will learn how to thread and operate a sewing machine, understand essential stitches, practise cutting and pinning techniques, and explore the basics of seams, hems, and simple pattern reading.

WEEK 1

Understanding of basic sewing technique (hand and sewing machine) Resources: Equipment & tools, Calico fabric, sewing machine and pressing aids. Worksheets. Notebook and pen needed to take down relevant notes.  ​ - Understanding of the sewing machine features – How and what each main feature does (briefly, and then in detail further into the course) - How thread a sewing machine  - How to wind the bobbin - How to creating tacking in preparation to using the sewing machine - How to create the following using the sewing machine: - Straight stitching (lock stitch and reverse) - Zig-zag stitch  - Plain seam  - Top stitching  - Seam neatening – use of pinking shears and zig-zag (samples of overlocking effect will be shown). - Hem* - French seams * - Sewing a curve and top stitching outer* - Darts*

WEEK 4

Start to make Tote bag or cushion How to select fabric for various effects depending on design (plain, texture or pattern) and weight. Knowledge and understanding of reading symbols/markings seen on pattern pieces. ·Cut out pattern pieces and lay and pin onto fabric ·Cut out fabric including notches and applying tacking to relevant points ·Hand prepare in advance to sewing machine work

WEEK 2

Buttonhole and button loops How to measure and create a buttonhole and button loops

WEEK 5

Personal development work Work towards completing tote bag or cushion cover. ·Opportunity to add the following: ·Zip ·Button hole ·Button loop

WEEK 3

How to prepare and insert a zip Note* Each student will be advised on how much fabric to buy for either a tote bag or cushion cover (filling will be available for £1 per cushion fill)

WEEK 6

Personal development work Final Sewing piece: Cushion or Tote bag Evaluate design work Fill in questionnaire (optional) END OF SERIES OF WORKSHOPS

All classes are held at the Parkfield Studio, Parkfield Road, London NW10 2BJ.
